History

Finale Ligure has always been the first border area between Sabazi and Ingauni, then the final area of the Roman town of Vada Sabatia, today call Vado Ligure. The name derives from “ad fines” and from the Latin “finalis”. It’s stretches from the promontory of Capo di Noli Caprazoppa and was there before the Marca Alearica and from 1193 became Marquis of the Del Carretto, that in 1598 they yield to Spain, which after will go to Austria. Genoa buys the territory from Austria in 1713

Closed between well-preserved medieval walls, interspersed with semicircular towers and interrupted only by the gates, the Finale Borgo (so called to distinguish it from Finale Marina) now offers to the visitor a feeling of protection and welcome. The traditional concept of defence and community survives in the grid of roads, placed perpendicular to each other to form fascinating views in tight spaces. Routes the narrow streets, each square is an achievement and a surprise, able to produce wonders with the marvellous “stone of Finale”; slate, which adornes gates, is shaped into columns, diamond ornaments.

If the great monuments (the Renaissance and Baroque buildings, the Basilica of San Biagio, the resort of Santa Caterina and - outside the walls - Fort St. John and Castel locker) express, so to speak, the strength and the vanity of the village, the shops and handicraft workshops represent the liveliness. This is, in fact,a place alive, inhabited, where the squares multiply possible aggregation and commercial activity (an inheritance of creativity in the Finale stone, ceramic, glass and iron) are harmoniously integrated into the urban fabric .

The village is enhanced by the fifteenth-century and Renaissance palaces, amended during the period of Spanish rule.
The Town Hall, originally ownered from the Ricci family, is one of the best examples of early Renaissance architecture in Liguria, as announced by the splendid portal; Cavassola building (hosted Pope Pius VII) and building Gallesio perfectly illustrate the concepts of the decorative Final seventeenth century; palace Brunengo in Aycardi square is characterized by double-arched loggia (Loggia Raymond) and the large family coat of arms, now barely visible; it complaints already in front of the complex transformations in the various eras of the Court building in the square , which was the home of the Del Carretto, so the Genoese and Spanish governments, the seat of the District Court and, finally, the Aycardi building has a front ornaments according to the eighteenth century taste and Arnaldi building boasts a striking façade in rococo style, enlivened by stuccos:
On the same square is Messea building and in the little square Doria there is Palazzo Chiazzari.

The most important monument is the Basilica di Borgo San Biagio, a sumptuous example of baroque architecture built in the seventeenth century on the earlier medieval church (1372), and preserves the apse and the daring late-Gothic bell tower (1463) shaped in octagonal form, slightly sloping, with the numerous and subtle light windows on each side. The façade in rough stone id unfinished while the interior has three naves and strike for the richness and grandeur of the decorations.
